Installing Maintenance and Updates to DB2000

Most software requires that fixes occasionally be applied and upgrades be made to enable newly developed functional enhancements. DB2000 is no exception.

The full DB2000 system comprises some 50 programs which, even when compressed, occupy approximately 8.6 megabytes. A 56KB modem would take about 45 minutes to download a file of this size. In an attempt to minimize the time spent downloading changes, the DB2000 system has been divided into smaller functional group files. Everytime a change is made to the DB2000 system, the change is applied to both the full installation file, and to the functional group file(s) containing the changed program(s). The DB2000 support team has developed and maintains a support site providing various downloads, query and report examples, release history, a list of known bugs and work-a-rounds, and contact information.

The following link will take you to the DB2000 Support Site.

Instructions on installing the Full Version are also available.

If you are installing DB2000 for the first time you must download and install the full version. If you already have DB2000 installed you can either download the current full version or you can download just the updated functional group file. The support site download section provides further guidance in this area. The directions that follow explain how to download and update your existing full version with the fixed file. In these instructions, the term "DB2000 working directory" means the directory in which the DB2000 system has been installed. This is usually C:\Program Files\DB2000V3

To update an existing installed version of DB2000:

  1. Make sure that the DB2000 system is not running i.e. is completely closed.
  2. Click on the above link to access the DB2000 Support Site.
  3. This will take you to the DB2000 Support Site Table of Contents which looks like the following image.
  4. Click on the Downloads link

    DB2000 Support Site

  5. This will take you to the Download Section which looks similar to the following image only the real one has more entries.

  6. Click on the link associated with the file you want to download. When you do, your browser will present a dialog which will be similar to the following:

  7. Choose the option to "Save it/this file to disk".
  8. Click on OK
This will open a dialog which allows you to choose where to save the file being downloaded.
Do not save the file in the DB2000 working directory

  9. Write down the name of the file being downloaded and the location (path) on your system where this file is being saved.
While the file is being downloaded, your browser will show a progress dialog similar to the following.

  10. When the download finishes, start Windows Explorer and position to the DB2000 working directory.
  11. Create a sub-directory of the DB2000 working directory called Backup.
This will normally appear as C:\Program Files\DB2000V3\Backup
If this directory already exists from a prior update, delete any files that currently exist in the C:\Program Files\DB2000V3\Backup directory.
  12. Now create a backup of the DB2000 working directory by copying all files in it to C:\Program Files\DB2000V3\Backup.
This gives us a fall back position if something doesn't work properly.
  13. Now locate the file that you downloaded. If its name ends in .EXE simply copy it into the DB2000 working directory overwriting any existing file with the same name and you are done.
If the file name ends in .ZIP, double click on its name to open it. When it opens select all files within it and extract them to the DB2000 working directory overwriting any existing files with the same name and you are done. If your system does not have a program capable of opening ZIP files you will have to acquire one and install it before you can continue. You may download an evaluation copy of winzip from www.winzip.com.

You are now finished with the update procedure. You may start DB2000 as usual and all updates and enhancements will have been applied.
